Hi all
Really sad to read about the end of RISI. Only just thought to look on the forum after being unable to get in to the main site for a few days. I had a huge wish list which was only on there. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a cached version of my wishlist, maybe? I don't really know how these things work, but I'll be gutted if I have lost it. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Since you'd have to log in to be able to see your wishlist I don't think it's going to be possible to see a cached version (even if one exists) without knowing the member ID number the site ascribed to you. ETA having said that, I've tried using Google Cache to see if can access any part of the site and, while I can get a sort of front page up with the links to My Wishlist, Library, etc, clicking on any of these just gives me the 502 error code.

Dear Angellore,
There is a slight possibility that you may be able to get your wish list back. There are 3 possiblities, but I would not hold your breath.
1. The site was hosted for many years. The hosting site may have a back-up of your wishlist, which could then be restored. 2. If you, yourself, have a back-up copy of the wishlist itself? 3. If you have put your wishlist down elsewhere, perhaps you use an additional book site, like BookMooch.com?
Overall, though, I would not get your hopes up,
Yours, polish6, Marek

Overall, though, I would not get your hopes up, Yours, polish6, Marek I don't want to pour cold water on your suggestions, but equally I don't want false hopes to be raised over this. We don't even know who the hosting company is so any request would have to go to admin who in turn would have to contact the server host; and to restore a back-up of someone's wishlist they would have to restore a copy of the entire site which would entail resurrecting it - unlikely if they have now pulled the plug.

Dear pennyt,
You are right to say that it is bad to raise false hopes, especially in a situation like it is now. However, the hosting site, I believe, is called CloudFlare. This name is on the error message itself. The problem is how to contact them. They only reply to people who have a Domain, presumably their customers. and I do not. So, I cannot ask the question.
Yours polish6, Marek
P.S. The final worry I have is that the site is a database of personal details, which I would like to remove. I will try to contact the Information Commisioners Office. Maybe they could perhaps help in this task.

I might be wrong, but I think CloudFlare is just a content delivery service, not a hosting service - and it's the hosts who are their customers and have a domain. The error message shows the CloudFlare bit of the connection is working, but the host is down/inaccessible.

Hi all Really sad to read about the end of RISI. Only just thought to look on the forum after being unable to get in to the main site for a few days. I had a huge wish list which was only on there. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a cached version of my wishlist, maybe? I don't really know how these things work, but I'll be gutted if I have lost it. Any ideas? Thanks. Unfortunately I think even if it's been cached, it's unlikely to be recent. My wishlist isn't cached at all. My book list (a more popular page for visits) is only cached on Archive.org, and the last snapshot was taken in 2014, which is not much use. If you want to look, as Penny says, you'll need to know your user number. The best place I can think of to find this, is in your browser history, especially if you've looked at your wishlist recently. The URL of a wishlist looks like this: www.readitswapit.co.uk/UserWishlist.aspx?UserID=XXXXXwhere XXXXX is your user number. You can either start typing that into your browser address bar (without the X's) and see if it tries to autocomplete, or do a search in your browser history for UserWishlist. It will return all the wishlists you've looked at since your history was last cleared. When I do this in my browser (Firefox - by clicking on Firefox tab top left, choosing History then Show All History) and I click on each result, it shows the site name with the user *name* at the end, so I can see which number is mine and which are other people's. Other browsers might work a bit differently. If you can't find your wishlist, try finding your book list or profile by searching for only www.readitswapit.co.uk/Userthen you can take the user number and put it into the sample wishlist URL above. Then when you have the full URL for your wishlist, go here and you can check Google and Archive.org caches: cachedview.com/ As I said, I think it's unlikely they'll have a recent version, but you never know!

P.S. The final worry I have is that the site is a database of personal details, which I would like to remove. I will try to contact the Information Commisioners Office. Maybe they could perhaps help in this task. I think your best chance is to contact Neil the site owner and ask him to delete you from the database. If the site still exists on the host's server (this is possible even if it's currently not live on the internet), he should be able to go into the database through the control panel and delete your record without deleting everything else. After the hosting is cancelled, the database will only exist as backups. The hosts will have backups which in my experience they will automatically delete after a certain time (usually one week or one month) to save server space, so you don't need to worry about those long term. Neil probably also has backups downloaded to his own computer or the cloud, which again would be a question for him. But in this case he may not be able to access individual records, so you'd be asking him to delete the whole backup, which he might be more reluctant to do. I don't know where the data protection law stands on this.

Thanks for the brilliantly clear explainers, Rosemary. I thought it might just be possible to get the right info from your browser history but couldn't look for it myself as I migrated to a new computer last weekend and so have no history!
If anyone has any success with Rosemary's method and manages to find a fairly up-to-date cache of their wishlist, can you please report back for the benefit of others?

Thank you Rosemary. I managed to get it to work using your instructions. I too could only see 2014, but I know alot of the books had been on my wishlist for years, so it's a start. I'll still be keeping everything crossed that the site might still pop back up!

When the old site really started playing up, I did post on these forums to say suggest you copied and pasted you wish list and put it somewhere safe. Did I do that myself? (I was going to, honest)
