I find some science fiction and fantasy books comforting during difficult times.- a bit of escapism! Becky Chambers' books are an absolute must - especially the first one. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is a wonderfully uplifting read. I've read it several times now and it has yet to lose any of its appeal - even though I know what's going to happen! I read the whole Becky Chambers series in about 2 weeks last year and adored them, especially the first one! Nat She's honestly amazing! There is another book in the series coming out early next year - I can't wait!

I love these books (the audio versions were great) I also read her novella To Be Taught, If Fortunate last year and absolutely loved that too I read the novella for my book club earlier on this year and thought it was wonderful. I'm not usually one for novellas, but this one was so rich. I'm looking forward to the new book in the series coming out next year

I don't have a go-to book or author if I need a comforting read .. as long as what I choose has the ability to immerse me into a different setting, whether a fast paced crime thriller or just a great story with characters I want to spend time with .. anything goes

My main book to go back to whenever things are dire is: A Redbird Christmas by Fannie Flagg - It's quite a quick read, only 200 odd pages and they are small pages as well with good sized print, and although the book has trauma in it for a few of the main characters, there is always hope, which is what we all need, especially in these days of awful news every day. I love the book and having just got it off my bookshelf now, I'll reread it in the next couple of days, if not today. Sal

Would prob be a festive reread for me, as you say, it's small enough to take anywhere & just dip into when you have some alone time ..

I've actually got it on the table in front of me now, so will probably start it later on. Just could do with something 'nice' to read. Be glad when Blackburn comes out of lockdown (whenever that might happen!) as I can't even meet friends in a park for instance. At least with the weather being as it is, I am staying at home far more than I normally do. Sal

My go to author/series is probably Piers Anthony’s Xanth series. I love the silliness of the puns, pure escapism for me. I’m re reading the series at the minute but I “save” the books, so maybe only read one every couple of months so the series lasts longer 😁

Over lockdown I’ve found much enjoyment in listening to audio books. There’s just something about having a story read to you which is strangely comforting! I have an Audible subscription and have enjoyed listening to some old favourites. I’ve just finished Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth and have just started World Without End.

I enjoyed both of those in Audible. Now I have all the Harry Potter in Audible and I go to sleep every night listening to the books in turn. Sal

I don't re-read books but I just want a book that I can lose myself in for a few hours and forget everything else.

I rarely re-read (although I have to say Elizabeth Goudge's Little White Horse is coming off the shelves again shortly!) I have just seen this thread. I would pick up an easy read as in a romance when times are hard as they often don't take much concentration at all. I was reading through the thread and saw this post from Mrs Mac. I can't say that I have ever read a book by Elizabeth Goudge, so I fancy picking this up and reading it in memory of Mrs Mac at some point.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is a wonderfully uplifting read. I've read it several times now and it has yet to lose any of its appeal - even though I know what's going to happen! I have recently read this one. I had to put the book on hold as someone had reserved it from the Library and feel that I lost some of the rhythm of the read. I still gave it a 7/10 though.
