To update this thread, A.J. Cronin's 'The Citadel' is the daily serial on Radio 4 next week. Ooh, thank you. I don't often listen (or even look at the listings) but I would love to listen to this.

Only 5 15-minute episodes, so the adaptation must really have condensed the story, which is a shame. The trails on Radio 4 say that the book helped inspire Nye Bevan to create the NHS.

I've just read the synopsis given for each episode in Radio Times, which makes it clear that the serial has missed out most of the novel in order to concentrate on the typhoid epidemic that occurs early on. What's more, the cast list suggests that the (important) character of Christine has also been omitted. I'm disappointed.

Well, you know what they say about not being able to fit a quart into a pint pot... This is so often the problem with serialisations, though - you can do so much more in 350-400 pages of text than you can in even 5 hours of dramatisation. And no matter which bits get cut, someone who knows/loves the book is going to be disappointed.

I listened to part one this morning and wasn't that impressed. Maybe more of the story could have been covered over 2 weeks, i.e. in 10 15-minute episodes. Even better, it could have been adapted as the Sunday serial. I can vaguely recall the TV production in the 80s, starring Ben Cross, which was great, and inspired me to seek out the book. Unfortunately, that serial doesn't appear to be available on DVD, only an old film version with Robert Donat, but I can recommend the novel.
