Dear All,
The sad news has been publicised. Members have been re-directed to BookMooch.com.
I realise that members of RISI love books, so many are members of RISI and BookMooch. Please could any people who are members of both sites, answer 2 questions.
1) What are the things that are the same for both sites? 2) What are the things that are DIFFERENT from RISI to BookMooch?
Please feel free to send in your posts,
Yours polish6, Marek

Wendy has given us the link to Bookmooch's explanatory page so that will help everyone.
Bookmooch is international, but be careful. Some bookowners will have a statement saying "I don't send outside of my country".
I usually put books I don't think will sell at the charity shop on bookmooch, after I have removed them from RISI.
You don't swap books, you get points for sending a book, so you can use those points to get a book. And if you have lots of points but don't want any books you can give the points away. The explanatory page will tell you about this and much much more.

Dear Members
Thank you for replying. I have some books written in the Polish language. I do hope on BookMooch.com I can have a chance to exchange these books. Is this the case?
Yours polish6, Marek

Why don't you ask bookmooch? I presume they have a "contact us" link.

You can search books by language/country of publication on bookmooch bookmooch.co.uk/m/language. You probably have more chance of people wanting foreign language books on there, helped by the fact that the site is international, but it still depends on what members are looking for.

I've had a look at Bookmooch and it seems rather complicated. I think I'd be worried that I'd end up with lots of points I'd never use, although at least you're not obliged to send books abroad. The site itself also appears hard to use, especially browsing. Recent book additions only comprise one page. Browsing by topic is particularly idiosyncratic - for instance, Dan Brown comes up under Literature (debatable!) and Cooking, Food & Wine! There's also no indication of how many pages there are for each topic or whether the first books that come up are the latest additions. They could learn something from RISI in that respect! I enjoy browsing the latest additions for fiction and non-fiction and am going to really miss that aspect of the site when it closes.

BookMooch isn't that complicated, I've been using it for 11 years, the same length of time as RISI. But I search for specific books, I don't use the browsing at all. You do have to be careful how many points you accrue, however. Far fewer overseas users post to the UK than they did in the beginning, thanks to rising postage costs, especially USPS. That said, there are still US users (the bulk of the site's users) who will send overseas, so it's worth a dabble.

Very sad about RISI, BTW. The end of an era.

I was on BookMooch for quite a while this morning, but couldn't find anything I actually wanted!

That's fair enough! It's good for old books. I've just mooched a few old Lawrence Block novels but it's been a long time since I've seen anything on a recent bestsellers list.

Just spent a few days slowly putting my booklist on BookMooch. Not sure it'll be as much fun as RiSi, I'll miss the chance of choosing a book that's out of my comfort zone to swap for a request

I set myself up on BookMooch at the start of the week when I heard the sad news about RISI's demise.
So here are my observations in case it helps anyone make up their minds. I added about 10 books from my RISI swaps list and ended up getting 'mooched' quickly for most of them. Initially that freaked me out as I thought it wasn't a two-way street and I'd end up paying postage sending my free books out and getting nothing back. However, 2 books have since appeared form my RISI wants list, and I have requested them so I'll have to see if they materialise. I have faith!
I am coming round to the idea of having my unwanted books mailed out to someone who wants them rather than gathering dust and taking up space in my house. Also the points aren't going to expire so hopefully I'll be converting them at some point.
I had been missing the serendipity of browsing other people's books as on RISI and finding books I otherwise wouldn't have, BUT I found if I investigated the details of the people sending me 'mooch' requests, you can see their books and I've already spotted a few I fancy. It's easy - click the 'Moocher'; it takes you to their profile page where you can then click their inventory. Anyone whose book taste you like, you can friend request.
I'd probably recommend setting up on Mooch and just adding a couple of books to offer to start with, if you're unsure. Then you won't be overwhelmed with mooch requests and postage expense.
In some ways I like Mooch better as it means I can cull the pile of dusty paperbacks without having to wait for a RISI request.
Hope that helps a bit.

Sophie aka supersophski Thank you, that's really helpful. The thing I've never understood is, when you've put your books on, and people request them, is there the option to decline like on RISI or do you have to send them once they've been requested?
