I've done my bit, I've read the Mayor of Casterbridge twice. It hasn't inspired me to read any more. But I would like to see the Hardy Tree in St Pancras. Odd Definitely, Mrs Mac. There are lighter ones out there.

I'm happy for the library category to be ditched, as I agree it's not doable for people, the county category was hard, but thank goodness I don't live in Dorset, or i'd be stuck with Thomas Hardy. I'm with Nat & Rosemary on the funny book and book that makes you cry too. Takes a lot to make me cry in a book. And this is from someone who shed a tear at Finding Nemo. I'm up for a 50 challenge. elliej84 , would you consider someone like HG Wells, John Wyndham, Conan Doyle, or even a children's classic (Railway Children, Black Beauty, etc). That's how I'd get round that category, as I am not a great classics reader either. I’m gonna go ahead and list The testament of Loki as my ‘funny book’ it’s nir intentionally humorous, but Loki cracks me up! Nat

Whatever works for you, I would go with it. There are ways and means and Wendy hasn't meted out any punishment. Yet.

"Set in your own county" is the one I still haven't done. It shouldn't be hard living in Oxford, and I do have a book for it that I just haven't got round to reading yet, but I think it was a tough task for some people, and much easier for some people than others. I've just started Tin Man by Sarah Winman and see that it is set in Oxford (Cowley to be exact) - have you read it?

No! That sounds great . . . it's even my side of the city.
I'm planning to read one written by a Chinese visitor to Oxford in the 1940s, but I've added Tin Man to my wishlist!

That's me told. And yes, Rosemary said it's not on the list. Give me a break it's 8.40am, lol. She's a bit of a task master that Wendy...must be working at a University that does it!!
Saw your post about Classics and Thomas Hardy Janice. Thomas Hardy and me are not on good terms! YUK. Far too depressing always. But actually, there is a classic set in Dorset - Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household. So brilliant I have read it twice! And set just down the road from me too. So if anyone doesn't do classics, remember there are a lot of books written in the first half of the 20th century that are much easier to read than the "bonnets and frocks" kind!!
Yes I am not really a classics reader but, I really enjoyed The Day of the Triffids and The Time Machine so hope to find a few more along these lines. I have several on my tbr so here's hoping they are as enjoyable.

I knew I'd read a book recently that was set in Oxford, I just couldn't quite put my finger on which one it was - yes it was definitely this one which I loved!

I don't think I am qualified to make suggestions with my total 2 books so far this year!
I had a thought, that perhaps make it a 50 BC challenge, and those who choose to do just 40, at least have a further choice of 10 more titles, to make up their 40 from the 50 titles.
Tell me to shut up if you like since I am not on here very much these days.

I am just catching up with all of last weeks' chat !! I don't really have much more to add to the discussion .. except to start by thanking Wendy ( windysisters ) for compiling it for us .. This is only my second year of doing any Book Reading Challenges, and although I have now completed the 40BC twice, I do not plan which books I will read to complete it .. I just see whether the one I am currently reading fits anywhere .. Mandy ( pennylane ) has put forward some excellent suggestions .. I may not be a reader of Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Dystopian, or YA .. however, if any (or all) of these were added, I would certainly not shy away from them .. I am happy to change the Library / emotional categories .. I think the suggestion to add an extra / bonus '10' is a good one, and I also think shanzi 's suggestion of picking 40 out of a possible 50 would give some people more wriggle room .. Whatever you decide, Wendy .. I'm in for 2019 !! P.S .. For those that have an aversion to the Classics, there will be at least 12 Read-a-Long titles to join in with next year .. some will be of the 'bonnet' variety, but I have many more up my sleeve ..

Yes, whichever way you decide I'm definitely in for 2019 as well. Thank you so much for organising, I can't wait to see the new list!

How about adding 'A non-fiction book' ?
I have gone to the library to look things up, I just don't use libraries for reading books anymore, so I wouldn't miss that category. I also struggle a bit with 'a funny book' and 'book published in 2018' but it wouldn't be a challenge if there weren't categories that people struggle with.
