From Amazon: In 1986, James collapses after a game of football at school. The cause is diagnosed as a tumour on the brain. Although treatment is successful, James will never be the footballer he was. The story of James continues on into his thirties as he falls in love, starts a family and becomes, in a modest way, a hero. In From Ten Down to Three George Roberts examines fate as events happen in James's life that leave him questioning whether things are meant to be or are simply coincidence. A phone call made in error lead to him finding love. A bang on the head reveals the presence of the tumour. Saving a young woman's life leads to an unexpected encounter. From Ten Down to Three is a delightful read full of wit and a dash of tragedy.
My thoughts: The author, George Roberts, attended my reading group. Unfortunately, at the time of his visit, we hadn't yet read the book as there had been a delay with the library getting the copies. However, he was such a nice bloke I decided to buy a copy myself and here are my thoughts.
This young adult book tackles some deeply philosophical questions relating to fate: does everything happen for a reason?
Told from the point of view of James, it skips along through his teenage years to when he is in his thirties. It seems that although some quite bad things happen to him, the effects they have on his life mean he is in the right place at the right time for something very good to happen.
Being aimed at young adults, it has quite a simple language, which I found to be a quick and easy read. However, it still very thought provoking, whatever the age of the reader.
