Did we have a thread like this on the old forum? Apologies if we did....thought I’d start a new one! The Desert Island Discs format is to choose eight tracks, one luxury item and one book to take to a desert island, so...what would your book choice be?? For me, books considered and dismissed include: the complete works of Shakespeare, a poetry anthology, a favourite Austen, but in the end I plumped for the complete Harry Potter...all seven books in one volume which would keep me going for a while and they’re stories I never tire of re-reading. What would you choose? (Incidentally, I loved David Byrne‘s - from Talking Heads - response when he was asked for his choice...”I’ll just take the one I’m reading now, because I want to see how it finishes” )

I think we did have this before in the dim and distant past. I have no idea at all what I picked then, but now I think I'd have to choose the complete works of Shakespeare. So much to go at, plenty of philosophy and wisdom for me to mull over, something for every mood, and let's face it, I'm very unlikely to read them all otherwise!

I think Shakespeare would be my choice too, for pretty much the same reasons as Penny! And by complete I include poetry as well as plays, the whole caboodle! (The poetry is indulgence lol! I love the sonnets!) Nat

Don't you get the Complete Works of Shakespeare & The Bible anyway? I was wondering that. It's so long since I last listened - I don't like Kirsty Young that much.

Have Googled - you do! Hmm, have never listened I'm afraid.
It's funny, because I think I would enjoy TCWoS too nowadays, I'd act out the parts with the help of a coconut called Wilson.
As for one other book, that's SUCH a hard choice. Harry Potter is a good idea, but I think I'd take The Stand by Stephen King, it's a whopper and would keep me going in between cavorting around as Lady Macbeth.

If I already get TCWoS, then I think my book would have to be something like an encyclopaedia (unless my luxury item can be unlimited access to Wikipedia!). I think I'd get bored of any fiction book before very long, no matter what I picked, whereas if I could learn something new every day it would keep me going until I got rescued.

I only really started listening to DID properly last year...I listen on the podcast app on my phone so you only get short clips of the songs and more interview. I quite like Kirsty Young but she’s on a sabbatical at the moment as she’s got fibromyalgia - Lauren Laverne’s standing in for her...not heard any of her interviews yet. I love hearing insights into people’s lives; Kelsey Grammar, Tom Hanks, Stella McCartney and Keith Richards have been favourites!

I think I would be amused by Enquire Within Upon Everything which was a how-to book for domestic life, first published in 1856.
The book was created with the intention of providing encyclopedic information on topics as diverse as etiquette, parlour games, cake recipes, laundry tips, holiday preparation, and first aid. It would be no earthly use in keeping me alive and safe on the desert island, but I think it would keep me smiling (see some of the subjects listed below!)
Whether You Wish to Model a Flower in Wax to Study the Rules of Etiquette to Serve a Relish for Breakfast or Supper to Plan a Dinner for a Large Party or a Small One to Cure a Headache to Make a Will to Get Married to Bury a Relative
