Right, I'm first up on the rota for 2019 and the book I have chosen is: Homegoing by Yaa GyasiEffia and Esi: two sisters with two very different destinies. One sold into slavery; one a slave trader's wife. The consequences of their fate reverberate through the generations that follow. Taking us from the Gold Coast of Africa to the cotton-picking plantations of Mississippi; from the missionary schools of Ghana to the dive bars of Harlem, spanning three continents and seven generations, Yaa Gyasi has written a miraculous novel - the intimate, gripping story of a brilliantly vivid cast of characters and through their lives the very story of America itself.
Epic in its canvas and intimate in its portraits, Homegoing is a searing and profound debut from a masterly new writer.I've heard a lot of good things about this book, and know that adelynechan enjoyed it very much earlier this year. Judging from the Amazon reviews it should appeal quite widely - I do hope so! I'll open the discussion thread at the beginning of January, and don't forget anyone can join in at any point once the thread is open.

I've just dug out my copy - a lovely signed hardback copy that was one of the last swaps I ever did. My swapper (I can't remember who it was, I'm afraid) kindly included the following helpful hint on reading it: "As soon as I realised each chapter alternates between branches of the same family, one generation on each time, I stopped having to refer to the family tree all the time."Thought I'd pass that on in case anyone was put off by the fact there is a family tree...

Not sure that's my thing, but it has good reviews, so I'm prepared to give it a go! Have ordered from the library too.

Oohh I loved this one! Will try to participate when the discussion thread opens, from memory of the last read as this isn't really a book I would read a second time, and hence I've passed my copy on. Recalling who's who may be a bit of a challenge...
P.S. Don't get it as an audiobook. I made the mistake of recommending it to a friend who's dyslexic (and therefore only listens to audiobooks) and she hated it saying she got hopelessly lost with all the characters by the third generation. I really liked the family tree that came at the start of the tree version.
