This was passed on to me by pennyt for which many thanks! because I loved every page. This is the story of a life - the woman of the title - from childhood to death. Told via letters she writes (to all and sundry) during her life, she paints a picture of who she was and who she becomes. She's self-opinionated, a go-getter, she knows what she wants and sometimes gets it but not always; she marries young, has children. She suffers grief and loss, sometimes of the most shocking kind, but somehow she picks herself up, shakes herself off, and starts all over again. As pennyt said when she mentioned it in her list of monthly reads sometime last year, she's the sort of woman you'd like for a friend.
At less than 300 pages, it's not long, but for me it was a joy to read. I'd consider it an American classic, but forget the prefix - it is a classic, and should be read widely.

Really pleased to see this one getting a bigger audience. Although it's an American classic, apparently, I'd not heard of it either until I found it in a remaindered bookshop in Philadelphia - and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It's delightful. Hope you'll feel the same as Mrs Mac and me, Mandy!

Apparently there was a mini-series made starring Sally Field which is available on DVD (and possibly on streaming services).

What a fabulous book! So clever, so insightful, so well written. Loved it. Thanks for introducing it to me. One line I particularly liked....
She's musing on getting older....
"Three score and ten years is barely time to scan the table of contents of this world. I have not even started to read the book."
As I said, happy to pass on, or will bring to the next meet I get to.
Don't think I'd like to see the mini-series. The characters are so vivid to me, I wouldn't want to see anyone else's vision. Also, the letters are so subtle, not sure how that would translate to the screen.
