Hello lovely book friends, We've just done the draw for Secret Santa at work and of course I've gotten the colleague I don't know much about In anticipation of this the organiser has asked everyone to list some of their likes, and he's written down "Books: I like Stephen King and stuff I can read with my daughters" I was happy when I saw books (phew, this will be easy), then realised that Stephen King falls into the horror category that I fervently avoid! Don't want to buy a King book as I don't know what he's already read, neither can I envision what sort of books he might read with his daughters... If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful! That's all he put down under "likes", so I presume he wants a book... else I would just be lazy and buy some chocolates. Our budget is £15 so I am thinking either one new-ish hardback or two paperbacks.

Without knowing the age of his daughters it's a bit tricky but how about Michael Morpurgo

Hmm, that is a tricky one. I've read loads of SK, so could advise, but! MM a good shout for the daughter. Jacqueline Wilson another one, David Walliams, how about a classic children's book? But, I agree, an age would be good!

It would definitely help to know the age of his daughters but my recommendation is the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo. It's a bit like a slightly younger Harry Potter (and written before!). We had the first one on audio one holiday when my kids were 4 and 6 and the whole family loved them. Also being a bit less well known they are less likely to have them already.

Thank you ladies!! Re: age, the younger one started school this year (I remember him saying during the summer that he hopes this mess resolves itself before she is due to start), the elder one is a year or maybe 2 older.
I think I was reading Babysitters Club and Jacqueline Wilson at that age... loved those but I didn't exactly have them down as something I'd read with my dad But then again, neither of my parents were really the reading with kids type, most of the time I just got dropped off at the library to do my thing.
Quite like the idea of a children's classic actually, maybe I'll have a look at our thread on here. Haven't read any Michael Morpungo or Charlie Bone - thanks! Will see what books they have written. I was thinking of Harry Potter, but it is so popular that I reasoned he would either already have them or don't think they are appropriate...

Just to say that Michael Morpurgo books tend to be very sad. My manager won't buy any more for her daughter (age 10) because she gets too upset.
(Mind you, she is a very sensitive child.)

The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy - a favourite of mine that I used to love reading to my daughter

This is very good to know, thank you! I don't actually know my colleague very well, and have only met his daughters in passing, so very keen to stay on the side of safe choices.

Just wanted to drop in with a word of thank you for all the recommendations, since I was wrapping the books this morning. I realised that with children's books the £15 stretched to 3 books instead of the 2 that I thought it would, so that was quite nice.
If anyone is interested, I eventually settled on getting the latest David Walliams (Code Name Bananas, hopefully it's new enough that they haven't got it already plus I did think the title was really cute) and the first book in 2 series (Charlie Bone and my childhood favourite The Boxcar Children) - and if they like it perhaps they can get the others!
