I don’t usually decide which new book to read until I have almost finished my current book. Then I usually choose one I’d bought most recently and this means that I have a lot of older books which have been sitting on the shelves for years! How do you decide?

I have a to-read-next pile, containing books that I need to read soon for one reason or another (challenges, buddy reads, circle books, someone wants it...), so when I finish a book I have a look at what's there that's of the genre than I'm in the mood for. Unfortunately, like you, said pile often contains the newer purchases and I don't reach to the back of the shelves often enough.

I do try to use the 40bc challenge as a way to persuade me to the darkest reaches of my book cases - however lately I've been borrowing more and more newer titles from the library and have of course been reading them instead of my TBR. I'm also trying to read up the series I've collected and I do find reading books in a series closer together means I read them more quickly because I'm not distracted by trying to remember what happened in the previous book.
I can sometimes find myself following a theme. Last month I read the next in Nicola Upson's Josephine Tey series and when I read in it that Agatha Christie had based a character on Tey I decided to read that book. Then I saw that the next Upson book is about one of Tey's novels so I'm going to read that first.
At the moment I'm reading a lot so as long as I read at least 2 books a month from my TBR I'm not too concerned.
Celia, even if you don't want to complete the whole challenge, maybe look at the categories in the 40+BC - it might inspire you to look for older books you have!

I use wheel of names for my tree books, I select a pile of about 10 and then ‘spin’ the wheel to choose and then when I’ve worked through I choose the next 10! For audio it’s whatever is available next on the app! Kindle is totally random, I just scroll through til something takes my fancy! I’ve always got one of each on the go! I listen to audio while I walk to the bus stop (I always have it set to read at a higher speed, and it’s surprising how much I can get ‘read’ in those 10 min walks each way, and occasionally if I’m gripped or too tired I listen on the bus too!) then I have a tree book for reading on my break or at home when the fancy takes me, and in bed if I go before Dave, then I have a kindle that I can pick up if ive forgotten my book, (I use the app on my phone) or if Dave is already asleep, as I can read with the light off and not disturb him! I also use the 40BC to try to read 'tree' books from my shelves that have been there a long time (this still means the older kindle books get ignored though) and I buddy read with Suzanne and a friend from my real life book club, she has put all our books onto little bits of paper into a jar and pulls one out every month for us to read, these can be kindle or tree copies so that helps a little with my backlog of over 2,000 kindle books lol. Also like Adelyne I have a pile of books for book fairies, friends, book club reads, and RiSi quarterly reads etc.

I just choose on a whim basically! But I do like to vary genres and sometimes I go with a lighter or heavier read dependent on my mood.
(At the moment I'm doing quite well at reading TBR books because I've not got that many new ones in during the last year/18 months.)

I mostly let challenges decide for me. But of course I plan the challenges so I'm reading books I want to read. This year I'm doing a 52-book challenge and reading for the tasks in the order they're set, instead of just fitting books in wherever they will go like with the 40 book challenge. So that means the criteria are quite specific for a lot of my reads. I enjoy finding books to fit - I can usually do it from my TBR

I choose on a whim, but I am like adelynechan, in that I have to get my challenge books out of the way first!

I just spend ages looking at the books on my shelf or kindle trying to decide what I'm in the mood to read. I do challenges to widdle down the tbr but lately I've been reading thick books which seem never ending so my reading has slowed a lot. It's hard to decide what to read, I might buy a book and never get around to reading it.

Lately, I've been trying to alternate books I've had sitting around for ages with more recent acquisitions.
