Just before Christmas, I saw that our library had an author talk in January. The author was Alison Knight who lived locally so I decided to read one of her books first. The book I chose was called Mine and it began in east London in the 1960s. The story was about a couple with two children. The wife wanted to improve herself so went to evening classes then later got a good job in an office. However, she and her boss fell in love, began an affair and she left her husband. The husband was distraught, went to her office, stabbed his wife to death then committed suicide by throwing himself from the window. At this point I froze because a similar thing happened to my mother’s cousin’s daughter in 1969. At the end of the book, Alison said that the story, although written as a novel, was based on her parents so I contacted her and sent details of the couple in my family. She confirmed that they were indeed her parents. And the amazing thing is, she lives in the same village as I live in! She is currently isolating before a cataract operation but we are hoping to meet soon. I can’t wait to meet her.

A fascinating story on its own and then to find the connection is amazing The murder and suicide were hushed up and never spoken about in the family. I only found out when I started to research my family history and my mum told me about it. None of my cousins knew anything about it so it was sheer luck that I was the one to read Alison’s book.

I have, at long last, met up with Alison and she is lovely. We spent hours talking about her books and our respective families. She brought one of her books for me so I’m looking forward to reading it. She also let me into one or two family stories which has made me want to research some more family history.
