I've been selling books at the back of my local church for quite a few years now - bought bookcases for the books yo go on found free bookcases on free cycle for them as well and the priest has now decided that the books have to go. We only charge 30p per book which goes into church funds. He says that it's because of the fear of fire caused by the paper in the books! I am now trying to sort out about 500 books and to get them collected by Cancer Research (I've got Gift Aid with them) along with some book cases and a book trolley. I don't know what I'm going to do with myself when all the books have gone as that was my main reason for going to the church. I love working with books and talking to people about books. It feels a bit like a kick in the teeth.

Oh that's a shame. I wonder if they've had a fire risk assessment done and that is what has prompted this.
I'm sure the book cases will go quickly on any local group. As for the trolley you could ask at your local hospital whether they have a book service which could make use of it.

I agree with Wendy, they've almost certainly had a fire risk assessment. I remember in my primary school teaching days we had one and were advised against putting displays of the children's work on the walls!! This must be so upsetting for you Sal. I hope you can find an alternative way of sharing your love of books. Take care xx

One of the problems with this priest is that he tells lies! So you never know when he's telling you the truth. He did say that someone from the diocese had mentioned about the problem of paper and wooden bookcases and fire, but that was well over a year ago and the priest did nothing about it and nobody else has been from the diocese since then. He wants the space that the books take up for another purpose and nobody can stand in his way when he wants something. When he first started as the priest at this church, over 30 years ago, in his introductory address to the congregation he told them that they would find him very easy to get along with, as long as they did everything his way!! And so he has proved. I just hope that he does give me at least 2 weeks notice that the books have to be gone as Cancer Research do need some notice to be able to organise coming to collect the books and the bookcases. I can easily see him simply throwing the books away which I'm obviously trying to avoid.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Sal, I hope everything turns out OK in the end!

That's ridiculous! Isn't most of the interior of a church wood anyway? What about bibles and prayer books - are they going too? Books don't often self-combust! I guess he's not a reader.....

I've finally cleared all the books and bookcases out - finished it today and took the ginsl offerings down to Cancer Research as I have Gift Aid with them. The empty space where all the books, etc, were looks very odd now. Still it's cleared and I don't need to go to the church every week now. But a sad end to an era.

That is sad, but I'm glad you managed to pass them on to charity.
