I have to confess to being a big fan of James Sallis, since 'Long Legged Fly' (1992) the beginning of the New Orleans PI Lew Griffin series I have been hooked. Sallis is probably best known for 'Drive'(2005) made into a Ryan Gosling movie in 2011. Willnot is a stand alone literary crime novel. The town of Willnot is shaken by the discovery of a burial pit in the woods containing several bodies. Shortly after a stranger, 'Bobby' Lowndes turns up at the office of Dr. Lamar Hale recalling a distant connection in the past. No sooner has Brandon 'Bobby' Lowndes disappeared when FBI Agent Ogden turns up asking about him. ' 'Bobby' has a mysterious military record and someone is trying to kill him. Over the next few months Dr. Hale observes the daily lives of the town's people ( routine, fears, medical conditions), against the background of the unfolding story of 'Bobby', the uncovered graves, the tragedy to come and inevitable consequence. This is fiction with beautifully drawn characters who stay with you. A revealing study of town life with its issues and tensions that create a noir feel. Somehow in spare prose Sallis manages to titillate with philosophical musings that fit the story perfectly. I really enjoyed this novel, Sallis keeps getting better.
