janetandjohn I realised yesterday that we did not talk bout this book, so I thought I would write a few of my thoughts down and see you if agree? Everyone else is welcome to comment as well, I need some help to clarify this book. I couldn't decide if the main character Edna was depressed or being childish or maybe a bit of both. She was definitely naïve but that may have something to so with the time in which the book was written. She did not seem to suit motherhood or being a wife, although this seemed to change with the book as she realised she didn't have to be spoken to/treated in the way her husband and the time decreed. Which I suppose was the premise of the whole book - she awakened to this new more dominant woman, who wanted different things than she had or was allowed. She found love with someone other than her husband and then when she didn't get her way she ' swam into the ocean' I was surprised at this and saddened that it couldn't have ended differently, with her being allowed a job and her own life. I felt that even though she thought she could do these things it was still a man that led to her decision at the end. MrsMac does any of this make sense?

I have not read this book - however, what you say makes perfect sense. I don't have a kindle, but would gladly have a go at reading this if your Mum would lend to me. This is the sort of thing we would discuss in our "book group" once it is up and running so you have got the hang of it!! If your Ma cannot lend I will see if I can get a copy and whip through it so that I can comment myself.

Well at least I have made sense - well that is until you read the book and say Ellie what on earth were you talking about?! Ah ok, my mums copy has her scribbles all over it and little post it notes, I think from when she studied her OU course, not sure if it might be a bit distracting? I found it on Amazon for £1.99 but would need to add to an existing order or on awesome books for £2.31 with free postage www.awesomebooks.com/results/default.aspx?q=kate+chopin&s=no&mediatype=all&Format=all&Price=all&Condition=all&c=all&x=0&y=0 Don't go out of your way to read it though as I know you have loads of other books on the TBR already x
