What an enchanting read, about a little boy who brings home a handpainted Advent calendar from the bookshop and finds that it tells the tale of a group of travellers who are on their way to Bethlehem, not only travelling there but at the same time going back through time so that they can arrive in Bethlehem on the very night of Jesus' birth. There is another tale here too, a little girl who disappeared in 1940. Was she the little girl who travelled back in the company of angels?
The Advent calendar is beautifully illustrated, and every door gives up a little peice of paper with more of the story every morning when Joachim opens a door, as he reads, the story of the pilgrims is slowly revealed. Also revealed are little tiny bits of history - the St Bernard hospice with the monks and their dogs; St Nicholas, various Romans amongst others, and of course the Christmas story.
Your beliefs don't have to be Christian to enjoy this book, you just have to believe in the magic of Christmas, the magic of kindness to others. I had to read out bits to Mr Mac and I did think what a lovely book for reading out loud to a child this would be, all the way through December. If you have not come across this one, seek it out.
