I think ER needs to chill. I read her comment when I left my 5 star review and thought ... really?
Some don't realise love comes in many forms either, hey Suzanne.
What a miserable judgmental individual.

You shouldn't have told me. I had to go back and read the comment. Then (damnation), I had to comment again You can't blame me for the flexing of your fingers over the keyboard .. He he !! I've read your response and I totally agree with you .. The 1&2 star reviews have all come from non-British readers .. Finding TDBOM offensive says much more about them than the book .. Americans didn't live through the shadow of WWII like we did here .. such a shame they don't see the book as a way of learning about British social history, all be it in an exaggerated and funny way .. Typical snowflakes .. have to be offended

Unless the friend request is from someone I know of, I always do the 'compare books' thing first. If we don't have any books in common, or the only ones we have are Harry Potter then I ignore. The same goes for 'Friend Collectors' who have 5 books and 3000+ friends! - quite often unknown American authors.

I recently had a comment on a review I left a few years ago where I'd said something about it being easy to think the book was set in the 1950s, especially as the book didn't mention mobile phones or the Internet. I meant because there was a quaintness about it. Anyway the commenter proceeded to tell me that mobile phones have only become popular in the last 10 years (really? I'm sure I had one in the 90s) and that there are still some places you can't get the Internet. Upon investigation I found the commenter was from Canada and this was a book set in Britain (therefore easily not getting my point) but also that she hadn't actually read the book. I didn't reply - I simply deleted her comment!

I remember getting my first mobile phone towards the end of 1996 - I know it was then because I'd just started working in London and used it to ring my dad to collect me from the station as the payphones were never working!

It must have been sometime around there that I bought my first 'brick' .. I got a promotion but had to travel to Ilford by train, so I could get in contact with home when stuck at stations etc .. It was a damn heavy brick, too .. I didn't realise I could delete someone else's comment .. Oooh, the power of the Del button

Yup I got my first one about 99 when I was 18, and they’d been around for a bit by then! Nat
