Arthur Bryant and John May are Golden Age Detectives in a modern world. They head the Peculiar Crimes Unit, London’s most venerable specialist police team, a division founded during the Second World War to investigate cases that could cause national scandal or public unrest. Originally based above a London tube station, the technophobic, irascible Bryant and smooth-talking modernist John May head a team of equally unusual misfits who are just as likely to commit crimes as solve them. From CF's blog.1. Full Dark House 2. The Water Room 3. Seventy-Seven Clocks 4. Ten Second Staircase 5. White Corridor 6. The Victoria Vanishes 7. On the Loose 8. Off the Rails 9. The Memory of Blood 10. The Invisible Code 11. The Bleeding Heart 12. The Burning Man 13. London's Glory (short stories) 14. Strange Tide 15. Wild Chamber 16. Hall of Mirrors 17. The Lonely Hour 18. England's Finest (short stories) 19. Oranges & Lemons (2020)

Janice loves, them, her Mum loves them, I love them. You have to keep on your toes, and I can (nearly) guarantee that you will not solve the crime before they do!

Are the stories standalone or is it best to read them in order? I ask because Herts libraries don't seem to have the early copies of the series

This is CF's answer to that belletinker Margaret. The novels are written chronologically, but can just as easily be read out of order (in fact, some volumes benefit from doing so, the exceptions being ‘On The Loose’ and ‘Off The Rails’, which should be read together). The cases take on the different styles of the classic detective stories.

Help please, I'm confused.
I now have one of these, The Water Room, and on the front cover it's says Bryant & May's First Mystery. Yet the list above and Fantastic Fiction this title is the second in the series.
Can anyone help?
(I actually bought this (from a charity shop) for my BIL who always asks me for books for Xmas but doesn't like a lot of the things I read, dismissing them as "too female". He read it and I thought I might give it a go before moving it on.)

When I borrowed these for my Dad to try, the Library stated Full Dark House was No 1 and yours was No 2 .. As FF shows publication date, I usually trust them ..

I'd seen that, I just don't understand how come printed on the cover of my copy it says it's the first. The cover is exactly the same as the one shown on FF but where theirs says A BRYANT & MAY MYSTERY mine says BRYANT & MAY'S FIRST MYSTERY.

Thanks Suzanne and Janice for all your comments. My copy is a UK print (typeset in the southwest even!) so maybe I should hope for the "rare misprint" theory but I shall give it a go. And if I like them I'll go back to the proper "first" one after
