Children's Author Katherine Rundell has written a great piece for the Review Section of the Saturday Telegraph. Find it here (you might have to open an account to read it, but it is worth it because of how she describes her early reading). She lists'] her own ten favourite childrens books - they cover a huge tranche of years, from What Katy Did 1872 to Wed Wabbit (which Lindsay littlereader liked) 2017. So I thought you might like to think about this and see if you had ten favourites of your own. You didn't have to have read them in your childhood, anywhen will do. Just 10 favourites.

This is surprisingly hard! I've read a lot of children's/YA books in the past decade or so, but the ones that sprang immediately to mind for this list are almost all the ones that made the biggest impression on me when I was a child myself - ie the ones that really made me passionate about reading.
So in more or less chronological order in terms of when I first read them:
The Famous Five books - Enid Blyton The Adventures of Paddington - Michael Bond The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - C S Lewis The Adventures of Mrs Pepperpot - Alf Proysen Charlotte's Web - E B White (read this when we lived in Pennsylvania when I was 7, long before it was widely known over here - I remember so clearly how much I was hooked by it) The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett The Borrowers - Mary Norton Anne of Green Gables - L M Montgomery
And two series from my more grown-up years: Harry Potter (today's equivalent of The Famous Five in terms of making children fall in love with reading) His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman
ETA: Aaarrgghh - just realised I (unforgivably!) left out Richmal Crompton's Just William books which definitely should be there, plus probably the Jennings and Derbyshire books by Anthony Buckeridge too. If I have to jettison two to make room for these, then The Secret Garden and The Borrowers will have to go!

Each Peach Pear Plum
Along with all the Brambley Hedge books
Later on in my teenage years I read the Babysitters Club series by Ann M Martin and the Sweet Valley High series, these are what stand out for me.

I can't remember many books from my childhood probably because I was a precocious reader and started reading adult books while still in primary school. I do remember enjoying the 2 Alice books and The Borrowers.

This post certainly brought back some memories. I've listed those that immediately sprang to mind from childhood.
Tom's Midnight Garden - Philippa Pearce (Re-read this one recently) Children on the Oregon Trail - A Rutgers Van Der Loeff The Silver Sword - Ian Serraillier Jill Enjoys Her Ponies - Ruby Ferguson (In fact anything horsey. Remember the Pullein-Thompson sisters?) Honeypot and Buzz - Margaret Palmer The Magic Faraway Tree - Enid Blyton (all three books in the set) The Sixth Wife - Jean Plaidy (loved historical novels back in the day but prefer factual books now when it comes to real people) The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark - Jill Tomlinson The Castle of Adventure - Enid Blyton The Silver Brumby - Elyne Mitchell

Plus Ludo & The Star Horse by Mary Stewart I didn't discover Mary Stewart until I read her adult books. I say adult, I expect they are what we would call young-adult nowadays.

Yes! The Family From One End Street by Eve Garnett. A lovely one that I had quite forgotten. I re-read it a dozen years ago, and it was just as good as the first time.

Saw this when it was first posted and "went away to think" but never came back to post so I'm going to have a go now, and if I remember anything else I'll add it later! Firstly, and most importantly, Be Nice to Spiders - Margaret Bloy Graham I was given this when I was in hospital aged 3. It's a young child's picture book and for those of you who know me it may explain a few things! It's set in a zoo, featuring a boy who leaves his pet spider at the zoo when he moves to a flat where he can't have pets and contains a lovely message about the role spiders play in nature. I still have my childhood copy too . As for others, many others have mentioned are familiar but my favourites include: Pollyanna - Eleanor H Porter The Painted Garden - Noel Streatfeild The Chalet School series - Elinor M Brent Dyer My Naughty Little Sister - Dorothy Edwards (this belonged to my sister, I think I was meant to be the main character!) Secret Seven series - Enid BlytonMallory Towers and St Clare's series - Enid Blyton (both set in boarding schools) Flambards - K M Peytonand Agatha Christies - got into these about age 13
