Yes! The Family From One End Street by Eve Garnett. A lovely one that I had quite forgotten. I re-read it a dozen years ago, and it was just as good as the first time. My copy of this is still on my keeper shelf! Nat

A difficult question. So many books to choose from! (Many of them already mentioned, such as The Family from One End Street.) I was always reading - usually books borrowed from the library. My mother used to call me a bookworm. I'll just pick out some of the most memorable.
The Little Grey Rabbit Books - Alison Uttley. Thomas the Tank Engine books - Rev. W. Awdry. The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame. The Castle of Adventure - Enid Blyton. What Katy Did - Susan Coolidge. Little Women - Louisa Alcott. A Traveller in Time - Alison Uttley. The Eagle of the Ninth Trilogy - Rosemary Sutcliffe. The Silver Sword - Ian Seraillier. Tom's Midnight Garden - Philippa Pearce.
And there are children's books I only read and enjoyed later - often years later - such as Goodnight Mister Tom, Carrie's War, the Flambards series by K. M. Peyton, Leon Garfield's books, as well as those of C.S. Lewis, Alan Garner, Phillip Pullman... I'm sure I'll come up with even more!

Oh my gosh, how did I miss Goodnight mister Tom off my list?! It made such an impression I named my son after my favourite character! Nat

I completely forgot the Rupert annuals, Anna Sewell's 'Black Beauty,' and Johanna Spyri's 'Heidi,' all of which I loved for years. No idea which books I'd remove from my Top Ten list in order to make way for them, however.

Speaking of children's books, does anyone remember those wonderful (relatively) cheap children's classics in hardback with colourful dust jackets? They were published by Dean & Sons, though I think there were other publishers who did them too. I used to have quite a lot of these editions, which is how I probably first encountered books such as 'Little Women,''What Katy Did,' 'Children of the New Forest' 'The Swiss Family Robinson' etc. as well as abridged versions of Dickens, e.g. 'Oliver Twist' and 'A Tale of Two Cities.' I was given some as presents, but seem to recall finding others at jumble sales (whatever happened to jumble sales?), where I also often used to find 'Girl' and Rupert annuals.
