You know what I mean - both Amazon and Goodreads are guilty of this one. You read a book. You liked it (or not), and suddenly another website comes up with suggestions for you, probably based on one word in the title, or based on the genre.....
If I loved a book I certainly may not love the one a computer programme found for me - especially as quite often I read it years ago anyway or I tried it recently and it was utter dross. This morning GRs offered me a title that when I investigated, I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. On the old site we did have a thread for a while along these lines, but far more trustworthy as the suggestions came from humans. Many of the books I have really loved I have found from suggestions by RISI friends - and that will do me thank you v. much!

You?

I end up going down the rabbit hole of doom when I click on the amazon recommends...
GR is pretty rubbish for recommendations though so I never really bother to look at them.

eBay are just as bad .. Look up one thing and get loads of other 'related items' bombarded at you .. If I looked into all the emails I receive that are 'recommending' me items purely on the back of a 'search' I would lose the will to live .. I ignore them all .. Algorithms have a lot to answer for .. Like you, Mrs Mac, I prefer suggestions and recommendations from friends, and I am pleased to say that when it comes to my reading, you all provide me with more than I could possibly need .. I would never have met (and loved) The Count, without you ..

I, too, often succumb to the temptations of the Amazon emails. I get newsletters from Waterstones too which usually also manage to pick out books which catch my eye. Thing is, these algorithms work on the basis of similarity so I end up just reading the same kind of books all the time. That being said, though, I also pick up a whole load of random things whenever I browse charity stores or the bookdonors bargain basement.

I get better books from book swaps and Ninja Book Box. I try to read a variety of books and read according to mood
