and no matter what era it's set in, you can't shake off the fact it seems to belong in another?
The book I've just read is set in 1849, but to me, they all seem like they should be prancing about in the English Civil War.
It's very odd.
Probably just me!

I think sometimes the authors concentrate so much on historical accuracy that they don't think about how the characters speak or act and whether it is authentic to the period. This of course then impacts on your impression.

One of my pet hates is American authors trying to write a book set here in good 'ole Blighty and then use Americanisms for their British characters .. I could probably write a list, but 'cell' seems quite common ..
