Thanks Wendy... funny to think that it's newsworthy now, when most of us have been reading s/hand for years!
And our motto here must be "Come to RISI, where between us we may just have the book you want!"

The second - hand book used to be some tatty thing that was falling apart as soon as you picked it up .. Now, with the boon in Charity Shops, I am astonished at the number of NEW books you can find on the shelves .. People also seem keen to donate hardback books which look completely untouched .. a new release for 50p is an absolute steal .. I have received 2 Brand New books this Christmas, but I can't remember the last one I paid full price for .. Is that bad ??

If publishers go out of business because they cannot sell enough new books, perhaps it's bad. But they all seem to be doing OK at the mo, and shops like Waterstones know what they are doing. We did loose a lot of small independent bookshops in the 1990s and early 2000s - is that still happening? It seems to have steadied off.
Acquiring (and then passing on) s/hand books is my way of recycling, so I don't mind that they are not new. But every so often I go and buy a couple of new ones directly from a bookshop....

Yeah, more recently I've started doing the same, as I appreciate how much I enjoy browsing bookshops and certainly don't want them going out of business! Sort of make it a point to buy one brand new from a bookshop once a month, though I can see why this wouldn't work for everyone. Waterstones have this annoying policy though, where some books are cheaper if pre-ordered online than if picked up (and paid for upon collection) in-store. A number of times I've mentioned this to the cashier, who sold the book to me at the online rate, although there have also been a fair share of managers who have told me to "order the book online if you want it at that price". I'm only buying from Waterstones because I picked it out while browsing, if I wanted to order online there are cheaper sources of doing so! Been sticking to Foyles for my bookstore-book-of-the-month since, but they too have been acquired by Waterstones...
