We haven't had a 'best of' list for ages!

Ooh thank you - this list is very much needed as I try to find candidates for the 200 years ago category on the 40BC, the one I always find the hardest. I currently have only one candidate from my TBR of books owned, and even so that doesn't really appeal (been putting it off for ages, and it's a tiny one). The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet sounds good, and might fix my impression of David Mitchell as I didn't like the last one of his that I read.

Yes a very useful list for challenges - thanks Mrs M! And adelynechan - do give Thousand Autumns a go, as I think you'll like it. I have had a mixed experience with David Mitchell as I got off to a bad start by reading Cloud Atlas. But this one and Black Swan Green I absolutely loved.

That sounds like the same reaction I had to some parts of Cloud Atlas and I hadn't bothered with any more by David Mitchell, but maybe I should think again? Sal

Adelyne, yes the 200 years thing is rather more than most historicals!
If you like retellings, you might enjoy:
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, or Circe by the same author Not the End of the World by Geraldine McCaughrean (retelling of Noah and the Ark) The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart (King Arthur and Merlin) Any retelling of a Shakespeare story!
Also .. Books by Rosemary Sutcliff, e.g. The Eagle of the Ninth Aesop's fables
