I was just mooching through a list of Rex Stout Nero Wolfe books (of which I have read 10 and there are actually 40+). Then I thought I'd better check my shelves to ensure that I had a couple to read when I found a "pair" i.e. two books in one volume and that I had read one of them already! So I've pulled it off the shelf and will be reading the second story soon.
How often do you find a book that you hadn't added to your TBR? And I wonder why? Is it psychological? Forgetful? Fear of making that bloomin' list even longer? Course, some of you don't even do TBRs, so you don't have to keep it up to date!!

I have three lists - one on here, one on Goodreads, one on a spreadsheet. I don't often find a book that's on none of them, but I DO often find a book that's only been added in one place, as though it's hiding in a corner

When I acquire a book I write it on a list I have on a dedicated note pad. Every so often I update my spreadsheet adding those on the hand-written pad.
What I am guilty of is not writing down books I put on my kindle so there's potential for duplication there (as in I might get a tree book which I already have on Kindle).
I'm usually pretty good at remembering what I've got though. In the past if I've done an "audit" any duplication has been for a reason. For example I found I had two copies of a book from a series I collected but saw that one of them had been signed by the author. I suspect that I had got the unsigned one first but when I saw the signed one I bought it even though I knew I already had the book.

I have a spreadsheet, but it's not always handy say, when I'm mooching about the charity shops, so mistakes can (and do!) happen. I really should put my list on Goodreads or somewhere a bit more accessible but it's such a task given the length of my TBR that I just can't be bothered. I'm generally OK at remembering what I've got though, often the ones that catch me out are books with different titles (Sophie Kinsella and the Shopaholic series, I'm looking at you!). I suppose the solution is to stop buying books until my TBR has whittled down to a reasonable size but... who am I kidding

I I believe you can upload spreadsheets into Goodreads if that would make it easier, then you would only have to add new ones as you acquire them

I thought I had all of Agatha Christie books on my Kindle (I like reading them every so often as they're easy reading) and I keep finding the odd one or two that haven't made it to the Kindle, so have to buy it then. I've just read all of Robert Goldsborough books, who took over the mantle for Nero Wolf after Rex Stout died; and I'm in the process of rereading Rex Stout ones as well. Sal

My TBR is only small (by some standards) and I thought it was all neatly listed in GR. I just went to have a look and ...I found a forgotten one 😊

I don't need a list. They're all stacked in front of my bookshelf. That's a lie, I stand in a shop wondering if I own a specific book and have to find a photo of my bookshelf. I've been trying to get through my tbr but I never feel satisfied, I have stopped buying, I managed to only buy two I think. Unless I forgot. I never remember what's on my Kindle. I'd like to go back to rereading. Impulse buying is my problem, buying them and not reading them. Ever. My wishlist gets bigger all the time when I see recommendations on blogs or twitter. I do write down what I've read and keep track on Goodreads so I don't reread. I did forget I didn't own a copy of Starbust by Neil Gaiman, I still could'be sworn I bought a copy but it's on my Kindle. I read it there. So it works both ways

I tried and failed miserably to keep a list of my TBR, books just kept creeping onto the shelves but bypassing the list so I've given up trying, despite having a fairly small TBR compared with some. If I do have duplicates it's most likely to be kindle copies as I forget buying them very easily as I don't see them arrive

I keep a list of TBR books and also try to keep my Goodreads updated - not always easy if the book isn't yet showing on there to add but sometimes one slips through and I find its not on either list and its 'oh where did you come from'!

Might take some coaxing as these things tend to be a bit funny but... definitely worth a try

Might take some coaxing as these things tend to be a bit funny but... definitely worth a try You'll need to be on the full desktop site. Go to any of your book lists and on the left hand side, under "Tools" there is "Import and Export" and details of what you can do
