Following on from chat in other threads with alison44 and natsplatt, I thought it could be useful if we had a dedicated thread for audiobook recommendations? I've recently started listening to them myself and have just signed up for a month's free trial with Audible, which comes with 2 free book credits....I used one on The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection (all 71 hours of it!) read by Stephen Fry, and am wondering what to use my second on. I can imagine that in a lot of cases, narration is just as important as content, and also I suppose some books lend themselves to being read aloud better than others, so if you've any recommendations, list them below.

Daisy Jones & the Six was excellent on Audio book as there was a cast of narrators ..
All Lisa See books are brilliantly narrated - the Chinese dialects are really brought to life, and the pronounciations are easier to listen to than struggle with on the page ..

I've just started listening to the first Harry Potter book narrated by Stephen Fry, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (on Borrowbox) having never read the books, if anyone of you have yet to read them, or is it just me? lol It's rather good so far and it is keeping my attention, which I have been struggling with a bit lately!

I have all the Harry Potter books on audible read by Stephen Fry. I never realised how talented Stephen Fry is when it comes to narrating books; his use of different voices is very good. I tend to listen at night as it helps me get to sleep. Sal

JK Rowling’s made the first HP book (Stephen Fry version) free to listen to through a new platform called Audible Reads...I listened to it last week and enjoyed it so much, despite having read the books and watched the films several thousand times! I’ve just been having a mooch through the rest of the site and there’s some other really good books available for free, if anyone’s interested....link here: stories.audible.com/discovery/enterprise-discovery-21103929011?ref=adbl_ent_anon_ds_ds_dbb_0-0

I tend to listen at night as it helps me get to sleep. Sal We used to have the Stephen Fry readings of HP on tape (later books on CD!) when the children were young. He is a fabulous reader. I've recently enjoyed the audiobook of him reading his book Heroes, which is a very lively and amusing re-telling of some of the Ancient Greek myths. I usually enjoy non-fiction more than fiction in audiobook format, though I don't know why. Among the best non-fiction ones I've had were: Becoming (Michelle Obama - read by her); Me - Elton John's autobiography; My Name is Why - Lemn Sissay's autobiography; Adam Kay's books - This is Going to Hurt, and The Night Shift Before Christmas; A Long Way Home - Saroo Brierley; The Nine of Us - Jean Kennedy Smith; and anything by Bill Bryson! When I listen to fiction I tend to prefer mysteries or light stuff - eg Alexander McCall Smith, Agatha Christie, Jeffrey Archer, Ken Follett - all easy to concentrate on, even when they're long!

I’m listening to the Michelle Obama one at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it. I thought that Becoming was both brilliant & captivating .. even though I'm not into American Politics

Jim Dale does the HP narration in the US. Always liked him! I did wonder about getting the Harry Potter with him doing the narration but wasn't sure, and then the car with Stephen Fry were 're-released so bought those instead. Sal
