Has anybody heard anything about when libraries are reopening? On the news today they talked about museums, cinemas and something else but nothing about libraries.
I had an email from one of the volunteer officers with Lancs County Council thanking all the volunteers for their hard work during the lockdown, like telephoning people isolating and suchlike. All I do is run 2 Shared Reading groups and can't do anything about that while the library is shut! I do try and keep up with the members on the phone and emails, just to check that they are all right. It's the one thing that I am really missing, reading the stories and chatting with the members.
Don't quite see what the problem is with reopening libraries if they can reopen other places. Obviously they would have to have things in place for safety just like they have in other places, but it could be done.

I think they did say that libraries will be opening but they may not all open at the same time as they have to make their premises Covid safe.

Nothing about dates from Lancs County Council and nothing from Blackburn with Darwen.

I got an email from the company that runs my library and several others in the area, saying that they ‘hope’ to be opening in early July but they’re going to wait and see. I did notice when I logged into my online account that the books which I borrowed before lockdown and was unable to return, have had their check-out date extended until the 30th September, but I’m hoping they’ll be open before then!

The bigger ones in Worcestershire are opening from 4 July but I haven't heard anything about Dudley borough where I live

I had an email yesterday saying Nottm libraries opening 6th July. I agree, the date seems too soon but it seems to me the The Government or whoever set the rules are now more bothered about the damage caused to the economy and our safety is now lower on their list of priorities

I should have a home delivery of books from my local library this afternoon so shall ask if there is any news from Blackburn with Darwen libraries then about reopening. Mind you I've just been told that the authority is going to be £15 million in the red! And may end up having to declare bankrupcy.

I agree, the date seems too soon but it seems to me the The Government or whoever set the rules are now more bothered about the damage caused to the economy and our safety is now lower on their list of priorities I'm pretty sure that any libraries which open will have risk assessments in place and will have changes to procedures, including the number of people allowed in, hand sanitiser and what they do with returned items. Most libraries are self-service now anyway so I think that the risk is minimal compare to some shops etc. We all know reading is good for mental well-being and I think libraries reopening is a positive step. |

Our county library service has emailed to say they won't be opening on 6th July but they are starting to making preparations. The library staff and volunteers are not that young on average, so I expect they are thinking of them as much as the library users.

I spoke with the man who runs our book group as he works for the library. Some bigger branches will be open from 6th running a limited service where borrowers phone or email to request "batch" of books based on authors or genres, not specific titles, and will then be given a time slot to collect. They're not going to move books between branches so choice will be even more limited.
Something is better than nothing I guess but I do feel for the elderly who rely on the library and have not been loaned anything for months and also those who need to use the library computers and printer etc.

They opened one near me recently followed by another. You let them know what books you like and you can collect them, so no browsing I think. And you drop returns off in a box I think. I'm not planning on using it yet. Most of the time the books I want are not available and I've bought so many to support indie shops ;-) lately.

We've had a 'click and collect' system in place in Blackburn for some time. People reserve books and then collect them at the back door. I hope they will be suitably wrapped in brown paper!
