This is the second book in a series of three, but can certainly be read as a standalone novel (as I did) as the connection between the three books is based on the lead character rather than on plot. This is a zinging thriller, and one with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end; because of this, a review is rather difficult as it is imperative that I avoid 'spoilers'.....
The book opens with Alex, a young woman who has been abducted by a stranger. Alex is trapped suspended in a wooden cage and slowly starving death. The main character is a French detective who is trying to find Alex in time, while also dealing with the emotional trauma of having had a wife who was also abducted and killed. The characters are beautifully rounded and I especially loved the grouchy and forthright French detective. The book is translated from French but you wouldn't know as the translation is masterful. The plot moves quickly with constant twists, and, while there is the odd bit of graphic description, it isn't gratuitous and didn't ruin it for me. I will be looking out for the third book, and possibly the first too.

I'm going to look him up on the library catalogue, I'm pretty sure he's going to be there. Only read Au revoir là haut, superb but not a crime novel.

I haven't read the first one - I don't think it affected my enjoyment of it negatively. But I will probably go back and read it now just because I like the writer, not because I feel that I missed out on any of the story.

Would you like me to send it to you, Lainy? Aw thanks wee love. I have had a wee daft thing here to send for a good few weeks. With work and I have been sick I haven't made it to the post office. Resuming to work today though so hopefully get to the post office soon, on nightshift mode just now xxx

My DIL has the first one and will pass it on and the second one Alex is easily available from the library. I must read the library ones already on my TBR first though!
