Finished A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult on the train back to Cambridge earlier. Solid story and the nature of the different characters was thought-provoking, but the reverse timeline was really confusing to follow and I thought the ending was a letdown. 3.5*, I'm going to stew on it for a bit longer before writing my review but probably will round down.
Up next will be The Hike by Lucy Clarke.

I've just finished Child of the Ruins by Kate Furnvall, a story set in 1948 Germany and the divided East and West Berlin. A missing child, murder and betrayal. A very good read.
Now continuing with The Royal Windsor Secret by Christine Wells, another historical fiction.

Finished my audiobook, Phineas Finn by Anthony Trollope, about a young Irishman elected to the British parliament at the time of proposed electoral reforms in the 1860s. Second in the Palliser series but could be read as a standalone, as the Palliser family barely appears. I enjoyed this and I'm glad I downloaded a lot of free Trollope ( ) from Audible last year. I have the next in the series lined up, but first I'll go for something completely different on audio: Killing Floor by Lee Child.

I finished The Last Devil to Die on Monday - it made me laugh, as always and also made me cry! In the acknowledgements, Richard Osman said he is taking a break from The Thursday Murder club to write something different but will be coming back to them in the future.
I'm now about 50 pages into another library loan: The Great Deceiver by Elly Griffiths the latest of her Brighton mysteries.

Finished The Hike by Lucy Clarke, another enjoyable one by the author though I didn't find it quite as "special" as I did The Castaways. A strong 4.5* regardless, though I rounded down on Goodreads.
Thought I'd switch up genres next, and get started with the first book of a trio (there are 3 in the series already published, not sure if it is intended as a trilogy or if there are more to come) I'm hoping to finish this month with Christmas on the Little Cornish Isles by Phillipa Ashley. Only just started to get to know Maisie and Driftwood Inn but liking it already.

Finished listening to Psychopaths Anonymous by Will Carver, which was dark and intriguing but I thought lacked plotwise - the book itself felt like just a more detailed version of blurb. I saw a review on Goodreads that suggested this is part of a Sergeant something series, but there was no prominent detective character at all so I don't think this was the issue.
Up next will be The Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz. I have books 2 and 4 from this series and have had the first on my wishlist for a really long time now, but I don't seem to come across it in charity shops. It just got added to my library's Borrowbox, so I thought "why not".

I like this series which are very quirky with the author being a character himself - much better than his Magpie Murders which I find too complicated than necessary

I've started Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo, but my heart sank when I saw there are no capital letters or punctuation. But I've enjoyed one of her other books so I'll give it a go. At the same time, I'm enjoying Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, which was not in my plan at all but highly recommended by adelynechan and fell into my lap after the meet

I don't usually listen to an audiobook when I'm not doing anything else but I just had to know how this one ended.
Agree re: Magpie Murders, while I did like the first (probably because of the novelty of the book-in-book concept) I thought the second was overdone and the concept made it tiresome. I thought Hawthorne was crafted brilliantly, it felt like the author was kind of casting himself as Watson and it had the vibe of a modern Sherlock Holmes. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series, and must keep an eye out for book 3.
Up next will be a Christmas listen: Wishing on a Star by Mandy Baggot.

Gave up on The Perfect Son by Freida McFadden after 70%. Couldn't stand it any longer. Clichés, flat characters and frating narration. 1*. Also cancelled the second one of hers I'd downloaded. Starting Martin Eden by Jack London. Also a freebie.
Finished The Dragons, the Giant, the Women by Wayetu Moore. Well written story of a family leaving Liberia during the first civil war (89/90). Their life in the USA and the return to Liberia. 4*. One of many African countries falling apart after independence. Starting La passagère by Amelie Fonlupt, set in Capo Verde. Should be an easy read.
