I enjoyed Before the Coffee Gets Cold, a sweet and touching book.
I am now getting into Girl, Woman, Other. It's a series of vignettes about mostly Black British women. I couldn't relate to the first two or three so it was a struggle at first, but now we've moved on from them, I'm enjoying it a lot more.

I wanted something a bit grittier than what I was reading so I started Black Chalk by Christopher Yates, a psychological/suspense novel set in Oxford. The author is a lawyer and this style comes across in his writing, which I did like initially but the plot just got weirder and weirder as the book wore on and never recovered. It's 2.5* for me, but I haven't yet written my Goodreads review as I want to consider it a bit longer (and decide if I'm going to round up or down ).
Not starting anything new just yet, going back to the Isle of Scilly first.

Hawthorne & Horowitz #2 (The Sentence is Death) by Anthony Horowitz was staring at me temptingly from the shelf so I started that one too. Experiencing the characters as a book rather than an audiobook is different, but I'm liking them just as much.

I enjoyed most of Girl, Woman, Other in the end, though I related to some parts better than others.
I've now picked up two books by Eastern European authors, which are both rather bizarre. The Melancholy of Resistance by László Krasznahorkai is set in a small town in the Carpathian Mountains where the natural order seems to be falling apart - it was published in 1989 so it must have been about the end of communism, but reading it now I keep thinking of climate change.
The other is War with the Newts by Karel Čapek, a Czech author from the 1930s. A race of intelligent salamanders is discovered in the Pacific islands, and they turn out to be dangerously teachable. This one is really funny so far!

Alongside my audiobook I'm now reading 11.22.63 - Stephen King. The date refers to JFK's assassination which is part of the plot and being the 60th anniversary this month I thought it would be appropriate.
I hadn't realised it involved time travel but I'm enjoying it so far and it came recommended. But at 700+pages I may be some time!

Next up will be The Running Grave by Robert Galbraith which will probably take a couple of weeks.........

I've only ever managed to read one Stephen King book as I don't like horror, but you made this sound very interesting so I'm tempted but don't want anything very scary! Really I'm a wimp. Thanks

Finished The Sentence is Death by Anthony Horowitz and loved it! This is fast developing into a series that I want to catch up on so that I can follow the latest release. Everything about it just clicks for me - I love the Watson & Holmes vibe of H&H and the way the author has written himself into the story is a unique angle that I enjoy.
Also went back to and finished Christmas at the Little Cornish Isles by Phillippa Ashley, an enjoyable enough chick-lit but isn't quite up there with my favourites. I'm not sure why, I just didn't like the protagonist Maisie as much as I usually like the main characters of books in this genre, and I found myself less enthusiastic about going back to Scilly. It's still good enough that I want to continue with the series (also book 2 is about the twins, characters that I was more intrigued about than I was Maisie), but not back-to-back as I had originally planned. Maybe I will read them according to when they are set (Spring & Summer respectively).
Up next will be The Christmas Book Club by Sarah Morgan, one of my favourite authors and the title itself has hooked me already.
