Ugh, I don't know what is wrong with me. I can't seem to get into much fiction these days. It's driving me mad! I cannot tell you how many books I have abandoned this year. Bah.

I know what you mean - I have had a few books this year that I have started and then something else comes along and I put the book aside and start the new one. And it can take me months to find my way back to the discarded books as there's always something else that catches my eye again.

Oh, I haven't updated this thread in ages! Long update ahead... Since then, I finished The Doll House by Phoebe Morgan, which did really well with atmosphere but in all honesty I thought the story itself was a bit lame. Reminded me a bit of Home Before Dark by Riley Sager that we buddy read on Zoom earlier this year, but with a significantly less well-explained ending.
I also made the mistake of going to the bookstore "with the intention of not buying anything", and ended up walking out with Leave No Trace by Jo Callaghan, which I zipped through that same day!
And then I finished The Other Half by Charlotte Vassal, one that I so badly wanted to like because of the premise and the vibe, but just wasn't to be. It's written in a satirical style that I just did not get along with, and there was a lot of "scene switching" which I found very distracting.
On audio, I finished First Day of My Life by Lisa Williamson which I liked up to about a third way in when I thought it took a bit of a ridiculous turn. It did recover somewhat but not enough for me.
Then my reservation of Folk of the Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton came in, and like the previous two in the series I whizzed through this one. It was so lovely to be in the Enchanted Wood again, Kate Winslet does a consistently brilliant job and this might be one audio series that I go back to whenever I feel like I need a pinch of magic in my life.
Today, I finished Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi which is supposed to be a Hansel and Gretel retelling but it was not and to be honest I don't really know what the book was trying to be. Part family drama part magical realism... just didn't work and I would probably have given up if not for the fact that I spent almost the entire day today in the sterile lab and had started this playing on my headphones before I went in.
Currently reading A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson and listening to Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead.

I was going to ask you what you thought to Leave No Trace? but seeing that you read it in a day, you must have enjoyed it? I certainly did. Can't wait for the next one in the series.

I finally finished The Wire in the Blood on audio at the weekend. I listened while doing some cross-stitch and, for the most part, the app worked ok and I got through it. It's a shame the app was so temperamental because it marred what was a good book! The next in the series I have in paperback.
My next audio is the next in the Kate Burkholder series: Down a Dark Road by Linda Castillo, I started it at home yesterday whilst stitching and managed to list to the 4th chapter on the way to work this morning so hopefully a smooth listen this time.

Just finished Hear Her Scream by Dylan H. Jones - fast paced thriller and solid 4* for me. And now onto The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros for my over 500 pages book. Looking forward to this one and hoping it's as good as all the hype makes out. It started off strong so I have high hopes.

I was going to ask you what you thought to Leave No Trace? but seeing that you read it in a day, you must have enjoyed it? I certainly did. Can't wait for the next one in the series. I loved it! I tried so hard to resist buying it (as I have the first book in paperback), but the bookseller at Waterstones was really making an effort and I guess I wasn't that hard to convince
I thought the second book lost the "novelty" of Lock being an AI detective but grew in other ways e.g. I was looking forward to being with the team again like I am with many of my favourite detective series, that this is joining the ranks of, and there was one part of it that made me cry. I'm also super looking forward to the next in the series!

I know what you mean about being with a team again - sometimes I forget about who's in what book and then I find them again and it feels so comfortable.

Finished A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson - loved it! The format is so clever, opening with Pip's choice to investigate a murder that took place in her town as her EPQ project (okay I admit this part is a bit far-fetched, I can't see it being allowed for an actual project, but still). The entire presentation is brilliant, not told entirely as narrative but interspersed with her project notes and transcripts of interviews that she has with the local folk. I dropped a star as there was something I really didn't like about the reveal, but still a solid 4* and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy. So looking forward that I immediately went and ordered them on Amazon
Then yesterday during a trip to the bookstore that ended with maaany books following me home, including Read Between the Lines by Malcolm Duffy that I started reading immediately and finished in a single sitting last night. It's an interesting discussion of family dynamics and two boys with dyslexia, I liked the way that the story was played out and Ryan's character as being so positive and determined to not let his disability get in his way. Also dropped a star though, as despite loving both teenage characters, I thought all the grown-ups in this book were behaving like babies, with non-communication a constant theme throughout.
Currently reading The Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier and the NF Post Corona by Scott Galloway.
Also finished listening to Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead, which I found a bit of a struggle. It was too lament-y for my liking and I thought there wasn't much plot for its length. Not helped by the fact that I was listening slower than I usually do because I found the narrator's accent hard to follow (though he was a good match, with the right accent to match the story), which made it feel doubly slow.
Haven't decided what I'm going to listen to next.
