I've used betterworldbooks.co.uk they stock ex-library books so their stock can be limited but a percentage of the book price goes to raise funds for literacy and libraries
Reading through past posts has given me a few new places to get books as I try to avoid Amazon so thanks everyone

Dear All, I use the website Abe Books ( abebooks). They have a very wide range of books, with booksellers all over the world. They also specialise in first editions of books, Marek/Polish6

D I have used Abebooks, abebooks and it is good to buy used books. However, it is a bit funny about buying your books. In order to sell a book, you need to enter a ISBN number. I have just entered quite a few, but each time I do, the system says that 'we are not buying copies of your book at the moment'. Unless you have a particularly popular book to sell, you need to go elsewhere, Marek/Polish6

I used world of books and they sent me a book full of notes and big sections of text highlighted when the listing stated it would be a good copy ! So that's put me off

If I get a second hand book that is not in order (i.e. not as described, etc) I complain at once. Twice now I have had the money refunded and not had to return the book.... I think that they hope people will not complain and some of them are not too diligent - unlike me . I always clean covers, I rub out pencil prices, I glue corners that are straying etc. But then, I am not a business, just like tidy books!

That did happen, I had the money refunded and got to keep the book. But I guess I don't trust them now. But the book was written in in pen and huge chunks on it were highlighted. I might have posted it on here at the time, it was terrible. I was 'On Writing' by Stephen King, I wanted a clean copy not one that somebody had highlighted and written 'plot' or something in the margin, it was quite bad. Anyone should complain about masses of writing and highlighting, it's someone else's book. But does make me think months later why did that person get rid of that book they'd obviously taken the time to make notes etc on? Oh, well. In the end if something is described or advertised wrongly they should expect someone to complain. They should do better checks of the conditions of the books.

But getting your money back is always a winner. Save

ABE Books are good value. I've recently bought a couple of books which were only £2.04 each.

Just broke my rule and desperately in need of The Four Swans Poldark book I ordered it from The Book Despository that I once thought took too long to send books out because Amazon charged £2.99 for postage could've bought a new book for that. Bookbutler is good but I'm not sure if it lists all places?
