I am so sorry to find RiSi is no more but very glad that the forum is still going.
I joined, I think, in either 2008 or 2009. I don't recall exactly how many swaps I did in total but it was over a 100.
Along the way I met some really lovely folk both through the swap system and on the forums.
I have often been missing in action due to time pressures but turn up every now and again! I'm back in the "now and again" category so will be joining in again for the next few weeks.
Would it be possible to arrange the odd swap with other forum members I wonder?
Whatever, I would like to add my thanks to Neil and Andy and all the forum moderators over the years for their hard work and dedication. RIP RiSi main site. We'll miss you.

You asked..... have a look at "free books listed on the forums.... and if any spark an interest you can always liaise with the lister.

My last swap with RISI meant I received Very British Problems by Rob Temple. My first reaction coming here today and finding RISI has gone forever was BAAAWWWWLLLL! My second reaction was Very British: "Well, that's put a bit of a downer on the day..." I used to subscribe to a magazine called Tough Puzzles some of which were way beyond me but some I enjoyed. They stopped publishing that because subscriber numbers were dwindling. Beyond Sudoku has similar puzzles but nowhere near as challenging and I liked the challenge. I used to subscribe to a magazine run by Craft Creations which in the last year stopped for the same reason and I have never found a craft magazine that comes close. Now RISI is gone although there is still BookCrossing and phonebox libraries. What will go next?

These losses - the closure of public libraries is another - reflect a gradual decline in once common pursuits. A golfing friend of mine says that young people aren't taking up golf. Our local history society is facing a decline in numbers because older members are dying off without being replaced. Charity shops struggle to recruit volunteers. And fewer people bother to read these days. Personally, I blame the rise of social media. Most people under 45 seem to be obsessed with their smartphones. I read recently of teenage girls taking and posting hundreds of selfies a day and becoming depressed if they don't attract sufficient Likes. What a complete waste of time and very sad too. I really can't understand why anyone should care what complete strangers think of them, or why anyone would want to comment on photos of strangers in the first place.

I agree with you so much on this - the rise in technology is damaging to the new younger generation yet it's now becoming a way of life. At 24 I am occasionally classed as this generation (although i would say i haven't got a clue in how to use much technology, I like the basics ). I cannot get my head around some of the posts teenagers now put up (including my siblings), why should it matter if strangers dont like your post/picture, and I certainly do not understand the need to air everything online. I much prefer having my head in a book rather than a screen all day! I also hate seeing the decline in libraries as I have a lot of fond memories from when I was growing up. My new local library is independently run, so I try and help out and use it as much as I can.

Good for you, bookmadkistie. At 24, you're probably the youngest member of this forum. (Or is there anyone younger out there?)

There seems to be a lot of members on this site, moreso than other book swap sites i've had a look at (they aren't as good as this in my opinion) Just wondering is there no way everyone who wants this site to stay open can donate £5 or more to the cause to pay for the server to be updated? I mean if it's only a cost issue I would happily put in money towards this to keep it going. I only joined a year ago but am very upset to see it is closing down since other book swap sites aren't as user friendly and don't seem to have as many members. I only swap one book a month or so, but it's so nice to have this in my life as a way to pass on what i've read and receive something new instead of having books pile up.

Rab - there was talk about crowd funding, but the owners say the server is kapput..... we are all sad too, but stick around, join this forum, and you may see books offered that you would like a go at. When I list my reads of the month, I asterisk those I have and would have added to my swaps list if I had one! Just ask, someone may help out!

Hello everyone, Just wanted to say hello again and say a few words about the passing of RISI. I joined in 2006, it was really my first foray into doing "stuff" on the internet. I had only really used Amazon before and saw RISI and thought it ideal for what I needed at the time. I listed the books and kept checking for responses and then finally requested a swap. In those days you only needed to check the books that had been added about once every three days as it slowly started to grow. I got to know my local post office like never before and learnt the phrase "proof of posting"!! As time went on I caught the Kindle bug especially for fiction books so I used RISI less and less. I still had a wishlist on there of around 70 books but certainly in the last 5 years nothing has appeared. I still have 115 real books to read as well as just under 400 on my Kindle so the obsession still goes on. I am still friends with many RISI members on Goodreads and Bookmooch and it is good to see names like Penny and Windy from when I was a regular forum user. Just a note re Bookmooch if anyone needs any spare points I have over 200 which whilst I might need some I certainly won't need all so if you need any give me a shout on Bookmooch or Goodreads and I will happily send some your way (the huge caveat is that you can still do it !!)

Just tried to go on the site and discovered this thread, I don't usually use these forums. I for one will very much miss RISI, and thank you for all the wonderful titles it helped add to my collection over the years.
