I ventured into our city centre library today. They had a box right by the door where you could drop off books for return, so you didn't have to go more than one step inside to return something. I did go further in, because they had emailed me to say a book was ready for collection that I must have reserved in March... I have absolutely no recollection of the book but it's something I might well have reserved if I'd read something about it (essays by an 18th-century Zen monk, translated from Japanese), so I assumed I did want it for some reason and I'd better get it and see if the reason comes back to me when I read it!
Plus I think it's sad if someone reserves a book and then never collects it - the book must be so disappointed especially a book like this that has probably been languishing in the storeroom for years if not decades. And the library staff might worry that the person had died or something, especially now... and they probably need my £1.25 reservation fee. So all in all it seemed worth going in, but I didn't browse.

I found out yesterday that my library is starting the "Ready Reads" programme from Monday They offer one fiction and one non-fiction book which they select for you. You then have 7 days to pick them up from the door. I'll let you know what they pick for me!

I've had an email to say that my "Ready Reads" packs are ready to pick up from the library within the next 7 days. I've checked my account online and there are 11 books allocated to me! The email suggests bringing a bag to put the books in but I'm going to have to take my shopping trolley for that number! I'll mask up and venture on the bus tomorrow and collect them

I dropped some books off at my library on Saturday...I had to fill in a track and trace form in the porch and then deposit my books on a book shelf that they’d set up just inside the front door. They’ve brought in a 15-minute browsing policy and you can’t exit the way you entered. All the staff were wearing visors and were really apologetic about all the new rules but people didn’t seem to mind...you just have to do it, don’t you? I was a bit gutted because I’d reserved a book right at the start of January and was 13th on the waiting list...just as my number came up - the book was literally ‘in transit’ to me - they closed all the libraries, gah! I got an email recently about it to say it was still at the other library and as they were unable to transfer books for the time being, would I be able to collect it, but this library is a good 30mins drive from me so I didn’t think it was worth it. I wonder when they’ll start transferring books again? My library is only a tiny village one and more often than not they don’t have what I want in stock and have to source it from a different library....

They must have looked up your borrowing history, Margaret, and realised you would need more than 2 books

They must have looked up your borrowing history, Margaret, and realised you would need more than 2 books As usual I hadn't read the blurb properly where it said that each pack would be of 6 books in each pack so I just collected the fiction books and left the nonfiction ones there! 6 will keep me going for 3 weeks!

I've made an appointment to go to one of the libraries that I do my Shared Reading in. The other library isn't open yet. Lancashire has been very fair in that they are only opening one library in each district. So I'm going to be able to pick some books for me to read, and also collect a big box of short stories that has been waiting for me at the library since February. I didn't have much time to look through the box then as I had a reading group to run so had a quick shufty through it and picked out a story that seemed to be good. We only managed to get through half the story then so we decided we would finish it off the next month - but next month never happened as we went into lockdown. Even I haven't finished the story as I wanted to finish it with the group. But I wanted to bring the box home so I could go through the stories in my own time and then photocopy the ones that I felt the groups would like. And I get to see two of my favourite librarians as well. Bonuses all round. Sal

Our open Monday apparently, but mornings only! (Apparently to allow librarians to pick books for the collection service they're running and to allow for the extra cleaning)

Our Library was one of the first in our local area to reopen. Some of the others that hadn't opened are now reopening in the next week or so.
You have to book an appointment when you want to go and have a look or to pick up reservations. You can however take any books back at any time when tey are open and they have a box for them to go in. They then get quarantined and they remove them from your loans once out of quarantine.

Some of the libraries where I live will be opening for browsing soon. They are quarantine any checked out books, it all seems strange considering all the cases are now going up in Wales. I can't see my visiting again yet, I don't go as often as I used to anyway for various reasons.

You can go into our to browse but I think you are given a limit on how long you can spend in there and if it's too busy you have to wait until someone comes out. We can still reserve books but only from the library where they are, you can't arrange to have them sent to your usual branch. I've reserved a book from a different branch than usual, I'm happy to drive over there to collect it but I do wonder what would happen if I took it back to my local branch instead - presumably cock-up the whole system

I'm in Scotland and was a librarian and at that time (1st Scottish lockdown) mine was closed. Eventually our libraries have begun to open by click and collect. The library I ran was closed because there is no one to run it (I left - my bad). It is beginning to open with selected click and collect times ran by another librarian until they get a replacement.
January 2021 our libraries were to slowly open to browse but then 2nd lockdown for Scotland began on 26 December.

Our libraries are open for "click and collect" - that is you make a reservation online (or I assume over the phone) and they tell you when it's ready to collect. It's already assigned to your ticket on the date they contact you and so you just turn up to the lobby, tell them your name and they hand over the book(s). When returning book, there's a trolley to put them on and they quarantine them for 72 hours before processing.

I'm off to my library either today or tomorrow as they have a few books for me that I've reserved. Some more books for me to get short stories from for my reading group, whenever we can meet again. I think it may be outdoor meetings as there's no sign of the library being able to have groups meeting there. I really miss the group as we haven't seen each other since March last year. Oh well, keep calm and keep reading.
