www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml (there are two pages, 50 on each) The BBC originally started this in the 1990s I think. The list in the above link was last updated in 2014. The books are a more accessible than some lists and not so heavy on "classics". I've read 37 of them, tried and given up on a further 3 and have 4 on my TBR

That is a much more accessible reading list than the Guardian one, and a much broader cross-section of writing. I've read 42 of those on the first page, and 28 of the books on the second page (which is rather heavy on Terry Pratchett and Jacqueline Wilson, two authors I don't go a bundle on!) By the way, there is also a BBC top 200 reads list - see here for books 101-200: www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top200.shtmlAgain, there's a disproportionate number of TP and JW books among these, but otherwise the list is another good mix overall of highbrow and popular! Of this 100 I've read 36.

An interesting list .. Read = 20 .. I was delighted to see The Magic Faraway Tree, Enid Blyton (had the whole Series as a child) was selected .. would have been a few more if I was bothered with Harry Potter TBR = 23 (some from Amazon Kindle download for FREE) Film / TV adaptation watched = 51 .. perhaps more if they used a different title Just thought I'd throw that final stat in there

30 from the first list, with a couple I haven't got round to yet; ando f that second list I seem to have only read 18, and none of the others appeal.
Very mixed bunch, aren't they?

Umm 7 off the first list
Ha and 3 off the second
I'm not even going to bother with the other list as I have and will continue to stay well clear of classics unless forced to endure them

I've read 32 and 27, but it certainly helps if you have kids of both sexes to cover the Jacqueline Wilsons and Alex Riders! And they're definitely not all classics, eg The Shell Seekers - Rosaumunde Pilcher and The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver.
I was also quite amused by the Goosebumps - R L Stine entry on the list. This is actually a series of over 60 books for kids but they all follow essentially the same plot which gets a bit tedious. Thankfully my son only got through a few before moving on to something else!

I remember this when it was televised, I still haven't read 'Catcher in the Rye' which I think Ruby Wax was introducing. I think Ray Mears was the one introducing The Lord of the Rings, currently rereading after ages reading Two Towers in summer, then Return of the king in the winter. I've read a few and heard of some, usually when I see long lists I don't know them. Didn't see goosebumps on there. Why Stephen King? No James Herbert.

I've read 49, mainly because I've read all of the children's books on their as they were my kind of era. I remember when this was on TV, I loved it!

Dear All,
I have read 9 from the top 50, and 6 from 51-100.
My question would be this - who the hell put Kane and Abel at 96? Perhaps a personal view, but to me, this has got to be one of the worst books ever written. (I am sure many people will now reply),
Yours Polish6, Marek

So fifteen years later, there are some really good ones that are favourites that do not appear there, and I gues ol' Jeffrey Archer's book was popular that year.....

I really enjoyed Kane and Abel when I read it a million years ago, I'd probably think it was a load of old tosh now.
