I have decided that I'm going to have a special shelf. I'll put books on it that I know one of fit categories, to help me prioritise those categories and help me know which categories I don't have a book for. As I said on another thread I don't organise my books alphabetically or anything so I won't particularly upset my "system". However I am hoping it will mean I see how I'm doing through the year rather than waiting until the end of the year to see what I've missed

I had considered something similar myself, but I don't have any spare shelves ..

I've got a modification of this by adding the books I plan to read for each category into the challenge post, but colouring them differently. In order to do this I had to go through my bookshelf, so I rearranged the books slightly (I don't have a shelving system to begin with, so that helps) so that all the ones I plan to read for 40BC (and BFG for that matter) are now next to each other though I don't have a spare shelf to dedicate to this year's challenges. It's also a slightly cheeky way of meeting the "all books from one shelf" monthly theme which comes up in March...
I haven't got all the categories covered, but at least I know what I'm missing to look out for suitable books!

Sounds like a great idea if you have the shelf space....
As I've done a lot of work on the list over the past few months I hold most of the categories in my head and am mentally ticking them off when I make reading choices and then just updating the list on here with each one completed.

I've made a list of the categories and have trawled my spreadsheet to see what will fit. I've got a few missing, but I can fill those in with library books. Some I've picked will change, I'm sure!

I've pretty much done the same thing, checked my tbr shelves for books that I want to read (but keep overlooking) and fitting them into the categories. Otherwise as the year goes by I will forget/overlook them again

I tend to do it the other way around - every time I finish a book I check to see if it'll fit any of the categories. By Oct/Nov, though, I start looking specifically for books to fill any remaining blanks.

Yes, I'm with Penny, that way round worked for me last year, so I'm sticking to it .. except I've found a book based in Essex that I will borrow from the Library ..

I definitely don't have a spare shelf to use but reckon by juggling I can do it. I will take all the books off one shelf then when I move challenge books to it, put the ones originally on the shelf into the gaps I'm creating! Well it works in theory anyway!!!
And Penny, I did it your way last year but left myself way too many gaps to fill in the remaining time available.

I always look ahead and decide what books could fit in each category, I then create a spreadsheet listing each book that way its not too closed I still have a few to choose from

By Oct/Nov, though, I start looking specifically for books to fill any remaining blanks. I leave some categories blank if I'm not sure, and don't zip straight out to buy a book (as tempting as that is!!) as there are some which I don't really know if a particular book fits. For instance, I don't have a clue which of the books on my bookshelf are dual timeline... but I'm hoping I pick one up and it happens to be. Was the case with The Girl on the Train - I wanted to read it anyway and was pleasantly surprised to find it was multiple narrator as I didnt have a candidate for that!

Hated them when I had to use them, and don't feel any different now
