I'm on the waiting list, but with people cancelling at the last minute, I might as well pop along anyway !! It seems a shame that you could go to the trouble of acquiring and reading a book and then not be "allowed" to go to a meeting - as you say, you may as well pop along if there are likely to be no-showers. When I told the group that I wouldn't be going to the Dec meet, they did say I should just come along .. As a newbie, I don't know how the system works, i.e when the meetings are added to the app so I can sign up, so we'll see how things pan out in the coming months .. On the reverse, if they suggest a book I seriously don't want to read, I can avoid that Meet ..

Does seem a little over complicated. Not exactly free and easy!

Does seem a little over complicated. Not exactly free and easy! It does to me too .. comes from living in the 21st Century, I guess .. everything has to be on your phone ..
At least it's only once a month ..

So anyone without a "smartphone" would be excluded!

So anyone without a "smartphone" would be excluded! So that includes me! My new phone is a "banana" shape (as seen in The Matrix) and banana coloured as well. I can turn it into a WIFI receiving phone if I want, but as I am a dedicated pay as you go user, I won't be doing that.

Using wifi on your phone doesn't cost you anything (or at least never on your phone's account.) What costs (and can be very expensive sometimes) is data roaming where you use your phone for internet browsing without logging it onto a wifi network. I'm a pay-as-you-go user too and buy a very small data allowance about once every three months. However, I use my iPhone on wifi all the time - both at home and out and about, in shops/restaurants and even on the bus or train. Theoretically if you downloaded a huge file such as a film via your home wifi you *might* end up paying extra data charges on your monthly broadband statement if the downloads to your phone took you over your monthly data limit, but otherwise you can use your phone on wifi pretty well as much as you like.

I bought my smartphone in April and in the 6 months I have spent £18 on everything via my PAYG tariff .. Phone Calls, (& Internet ones for free), texts, emails and having access to the Internet away from home .. Whether I have piggybacked off another WiFi provider, like in a shop, used the Library or indeed at the Book Barn, or connected to a BT Hotspot .. if I cannot get a connection in a shop, I switch on Mobile Data and the phone connects via 4G .. I do my search then turn off that service .. I also love being able to take a photo at the beach, for example, turn on the Internet and add my pic to FB or send to friends .. all from my towel .. The main aspect is now being contactable at all times .. receiving calls, texts, emails etc on the go .. not to mention reading a kindle or listening to an audio book whilst I'm on that towel ..

Just had a notification from 'Meet Up' .. I am able to attend the next meeting as a 'legitimate' invitee now (rather than an interloper ) as three have pulled out Wonder when we'll be able to Vote on the Book choices for the beginning of 2019 !!

So what is December's book then? We are reviewing Frankenstein at the December meet .. that is the last read I am aware of .. The date for the January meet falls on the 2nd, so I'm guessing that perhaps that one doesn't happen (??) I'm sure I will find out soon enough ..

We don't have a meeting in December but that's because we always meet on the last Wednesday of the month which would of course be Boxing Day this year. We sometimes get given two books at the November meeting to discuss at the end of January.

As my pile of books to read 'next' grows and my time decreases, I need to prioritise my reading more, so I'm looking for some advice please .. For my Book Club meeting in June I was supposed to read Small Island by Andrea Levy, but I only got a copy from the Lib last week .. should I try to speed read it, or return it and move on ?? Next up is Moon Palace by Paul Auster .. the Lib doesn't have a copy, so I will need to buy and quickly, to read before 10th July .. anyone heard of or read this, as the blurb doesn't inspire me .. For the August meet, it's The Library Book by Susan Orlean .. non-Fiction is not my usual genre and the reviews on GR very mixed .. at least I can borrow an e-book .. any comments anyone ?? Then Tombland by CJ Sansom has also been picked .. this Series interests me, but you know my stance on a Series by now .. Starting off on Book 7 (and at 900 pages long) will be a no-go for me, unless any Shardlake fan give me any advice .. Obviously, I don't expect to like every book chosen, and I cannot expect not to have to buy the occasional one here and there to join in .. but part of me keeps thinking about the time I could be spending reading what I already own .. Grrrrrrr !!
